4/27-5/3

Both studios made lasting memories this week. While the Spark heroes’ memories were made with laughter and joy, the Fire heroes’ memories were forged with tears and frustration.

From the Spark Studio: Thursday felt like the warmest day of Spring yet. What a perfect day to splash and fall in the frigid waters of the Creekside Park stream! In celebration of Arbor day the heroes collected specimens, did bark rubbings and attempted some other botany quest related activities. I say attempted because before too long, the pull of the stream was too much to resist and the heroes simply enjoyed the magic of a stream. My feet were aching with cold after wading through one time, but most of the heroes didn’t seem to notice as they ran back and forth through the water – a few of them falling all the way in! Throwing rocks, hunting bugs, climbing on logs, and splashing in the water, the heroes enjoyed a beautiful day of spring, playing with each other and making magical memories.

From the Fire Studio: The Fire Studio is continuing to experience the importance of the Bill of Rights. Last week, the heroes voted to lose their right to protection from unreasonable search and seizure. As we began this exercise I had no idea the impact it would make. I first noticed on Thursday as heroes were going through their cubbies and taking most of their belongings home. On Monday that behavior continued along with moving the computer cart into the “quiet” room. As Tuesday morning dawned heroes came with locks on their backpacks and a plan to blockade and guard the quiet room. As the day continued and I “searched and seized” a few of the heroes belongings, it became apparent to me that the fear they were living in was going to do far more damage than anything I was actually going to seize. Before the day was over they had turned on each other, were threatening to revolt, multiple heroes were crying, some were stealing from me, others were bribing me, and many didn’t want to return to school the next day. The simulation had been far more effective than I imagined. As we discussed their emotions and feelings the next day. We recognized potential outcomes of living in fear and how often we take our freedoms for granted until we lose them. It led to a discussion of banning books as well. Despite the somewhat intense anger directed towards me, I was so grateful for the learning that happened! I hope this day remains an unforgettable memory for the heroes.

In the beginning when being blockaded in the “quiet” room was fun

Due to the tears, frustrations and anger I didn’t take any other pictures of the search and seizure day so here are a few pictures of other events from the week. Check out the weekly pictures to see even more.
