10/1-10/7

As we walked into the jelly fish room a Fire Studio hero exclaimed “That’s my animal! That’s what I’m studying!” She then proceeded to share several interesting facts with us about jelly fish. The opportunity to see, touch and feed real life animals, elicited joy and laughter from heroes in both studios and for some it even changed the relationship between the heroes and animals they had previously only read about.

Both studios enjoyed exploring their relationship with Mr Resistance this week. All of us began to recognize when he speaks to us and what he tries to keep us from doing. Ask your hero what Mr Resistance tries to keep them from doing.

Each hero in both studios broke through a paper representing overcoming Mr Resistance
Later on in the week this hero celebrated “I did it! Mr Resistance was telling me not to do this math, but I told him no and I did it!”

An older hero explains to a younger hero when to use commas. An older hero guides a younger hero in planning her Core Skills time and then works next to her for the next hour. A younger hero invites an older hero to work together on a project. A hero (not totally sure how to do it himself) offers to tie a fellow travelers shoe laces. Fire Studio heroes read daily with Spark Studio heroes. It was so evident this week that beautiful relationships between heroes of all ages are vibrant and strong. A parent summed it up well this week when she said, “I love how much kids of different ages interact with each other at CHOICE. It helps kids learn from a young age that people of all ages and interests and all stages of life have value and something to offer.”

In the Spark Studio… this week heroes explored their relationship with the land and water. We looked at pollution in the ocean and discussed why this is a problem for our ocean animals. We explored how garbage ends up in the ocean and what we can do on land to help prevent that. We explored our own studio and outside area and challenged the heroes to find the most garbage and clean it up.

In our study of Australia, heroes made a traditional children’s birthday treat called Fairy Bread. They were given the recipe and were tasked with making their own Fairy Bread. After, they reflected on their experience and recorded the results.

In the Fire Studio…The heroes got up close and personal with their marine science studies as they dissected fish this week. Through it, they had lessons in anatomy, cooperation, gracefully dealing with distasteful smells and sights, follow-through, clean-up, and gratitude for those who do the dirtier work in making our food accessible and ready to eat. For some heroes this really pushed their boundaries. For others, they would dissect every day. For all, they are developing a healthy relationship with science and food 🙂

The heroes began looking at their relationship with themselves this week in jolliness. After an introduction to Diwali and a fun game with gifts, they were challenged to identify their personal gifts they have discovered thus far this year. While they were quick to identify others’ gifts, for some, identifying their own gifts was a sincere challenge.

Whether it is with animals, our oceans, other heroes or themselves, the heroes are continually evaluating and building relationships. Real relationships is the daily work at CHOICE.
