2/22-2/27

One of the many nudges to start CHOICE came from our daughter as she walked into the house from school one day. “Mom, I am tired of reading about other people doing this, I want to do things!” The “doing” started this session right when the heroes walked into school Tuesday morning…

How far can you launch a plastic doll?

How close can you come to hitting a target with a sling shot?

These were the morning questions for the whole school that “launched” our new session of physics fun!

In the Spark Studio…Heroes are exploring the questions: What is physics? We are discovering answers to this question through our works and discussions:

How do prisms work?
How do tools work?
How do circuits work?
How do magnets work?
What happens when you mix colors?

Recording our results is an important step…

Our heroes turned scientists will practice the scientific method all session as we ask questions, record our observations and guesses (hypotheses), do experiments, and share our results.

Through literature we will discuss how things work. How do machines work? How do wedges, pulleys, levers and more work?

Our scientists can’t wait to share with you all their experiments and findings at the exhibition!

In the Fire Studio… Imagine an earth just like ours but it’s yet to be inhabited. This is where our heroes are right now when they come to school. They transported through Dr. Strange’s portal onto a faraway, uninhabited planet much like our own. Fortunately the rules of physics still apply here, and the heroes are doing research and training to better understand these physical laws. Teams are creating colonies on this different planet and they are competing to attract the future colonists (you) at the exhibition. The more physics they learn, the more access to resources and technology they gain, and the better their colonies will be. Come step through the portal on exhibition day and decide where you’d like to take up residence!

Transporting through the portal.
Parachuting into their biome.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays begin with individual research. Ask your heroes what they chose to learn about.

Once research is complete, heroes move on to the hands-on challenges. Ask your hero what their hands-on challenge was on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Thursday is build day. Ask your hero what they added to their colony each Thursday.

The habits of Olympic and Paralympic athletes inspired this session’s Jolliness. Heroes wrote Session Excellence Habits and are creating vision boards.

No doubt, Learning to Do is part of every day at CHOICE. As heroes Learn to DO this session, they are also learning that physics is fun!
