We often talk about being risk averse and risk tolerant in regards to our financial situation. In truth, risk influences far more than our financial decisions. Our ability to assess risk and then take or avoid risk is part of our daily decision making process. Giving the heroes the opportunity to assess risk, make decisions accordingly and then see the outcome is an important component of CHOICE.
In the Spark Studio… A question we explored this week that relates to risk is: What is safety? If something is dangerous does it stop you from doing it? Do people walk around in bubble suits to prevent them from falling, tripping, or getting injured? The point was brought up that walking around in a bubble might be fun at first, but it would get boring really fast. Having the right tools for a “dangerous” task makes a big difference. The heroes key finding was: You are the best judge to know if something is safe or not.
As part of our safety discussions, we enjoyed walking to a park this week. Prior to our outing we discussed traffic signs and their meanings. As we walked to the park we observed traffic signs and practiced safely crossing streets.
Heroes explored risk and safety in many other ways. In Anji Play heroes tried lifting heavy objects. They problem-solved as to where to stand around the object, how to not get their fingers smashed, and how many people they needed to lift the object–all without injury. Heroes explored jumping off an outside table and landing without injury.

In the Fire Studio… I continue to be impressed with the emotional risk heroes are willing to take in their studio. So often heroes are willing to be vulnerable with their emotions and opinions. They have created a community where they feel safe taking emotional risks.
On Monday they exhibited their willingness to take some emotional risk as they dressed up and acted in character for their musical theater character hour. They were hilarious!
Our weekly Thursday outings have been a great experiment in physical risk assessment. Heroes have come back with scratches, scrapes, cuts, bruises and happiness! It has been so fun watching them scramble and explore.
In particular, Heroes explored the idea of risk through talking about their fears this week. They discussed the question: “Is it good to face ALL your fears?” While the heroes were split on this question, they all agreed that it was healthy to face some fears and that rock climbing was a great way to do it! The following day many got to practice facing those fears as they climbed on the rock! Check out the weekly pictures to see a picture of each of your heroes climbing.
Watching heroes assess risk, take risks, succeed, fail and try again helps me assess my own risk aversion and risk tolerance. I learn from them every day!
