Week 18: 1/19-1/25
From the Spark Studio
From Miss Nina: This week I loved seeing each of the heroes in flow. I saw individuals move past their comfort zone and try hard things. I saw heroes choose works that engaged them in deep learning.
Heroes were excited to learn more about the human body and enjoyed activities that simulated the functions of the body. They loved the egg drop that went along with learning about the skull protecting the brain, and the oxygen relay simulating the function of the respiratory system. I thought they were just going to be fun one-time activities to help them understand the concepts, but they were so excited that they took the activities out for recess a couple of times : )
And to see these heroes at recess is beautiful. They have grown so much in becoming a tribe. They work together to build complex creations and cooperatively play together.
From the Elementary Studio
From JeVonne: Excellence is never to be taken for granted, but it is becoming more and more the norm. The focused core skills from last week carried over into core skills this week. I even heard a hero, in flow, turn down a game invitation from his friend to finish his math!
The Elementary Studio’s mentoring of the Spark Studio is delightful to behold. The readers in the Spark Studio enjoy a chance to read to the older heroes and everyone loves listening to a good story!
Kara’s quest activities this week were excellent as always. Taking apart an electronic device, creating a circuit to make a “light up” card, and creating static electricity, provided challenge and fun for the heroes. Turns out some electronics are harder to break apart than others!!!
Not to say studio life is perfect… We had a few tears as heroes were held accountable to tasks they didn’t complete. Multiple heroes’ proposals were voted down 16-1 in town hall (always a challenging moment) and most importantly – we girls still haven’t beaten the darn boys in soccer!!!
However, even tears and losses are part of the path to excellence. Thank you for sharing your excellent heroes with us!
