Session 7 Week 4

Someone recently commented that the most important lessons from a “school experience” are what we take with us, after we have forgotten everything 🙂 With that in mind we asked heroes a few questions on Thursday. Their responses are our final post of the year:

To the Spark heroes: What do you want your parents to know about CHOICE?

It’s fun and I like it. It’s great! My favorite thing is outside time. It’s warm and nice.

It’s fun! I love this work that I’m doing. Work really hard and keep going.

You can make your own choices like I get to choose what I’m going to do that day.

I love doing that work that is over there. I love this work, too. We do CHOICE work cycle. We create.

I like that we get our own choice and that we get really fun things to do.

My favorite things about the school is playing with Maverick because he does the nicest things to me and I love him so much because he bes nice to me.

I like that we get to make our own choices. They teach you so much, like math problems and language.

What do you want your parents to know about CHOICE cont:

CHOICE is a really fun place for me and I learn actually a whole lot. It’s really fun for me in the way that I learn. I like the way Jeannette teaches language. I like the ways she shows me the ways I can come over with the challenges I have.

It’s fun. fun. It’s amazing. It’s like a home to me. I can make a ton of friends here. It’s really easy learning without having to sit at a desk and work on something really hard.

Choice is an Acton of Learning Academy and it’s SO fun! You have so many choices. You can do what you want. You don’t have to sit down in desks and write down stuff and when you’re done you have sit… You don’t have to do that. You can do works during Montessori work cycle. During CHOICE work cycle you can do other stuff. You can just keep going. It’s so fun! I love CHOICE.

I made this flag at CHOICE and they let us do creative stuff and it’s fun for me because I get to create my thing and it’s fun to play with. The people here are good friends and people are nice to you. I love this school so much that I don’t want to be sent to a different school. The guides are really nice to me. Everybody here can be a little harsh and hard but our guides help us work through the stuff that we do.

I love going to school cause there’s lots of works and I have lots of friends here. I like playing Jameson and Oscar and Silas and Trenten because they be nice to me. And sometimes we get in fights like someone doesn’t want that and someone else doesn’t want that.

Well, that’s obvious! I want them to know it’s a great school. There’s great people. My guides are amazing. I just love this school.

To the Spark & Fire studio heroes: What did you learn most this year?

language doing everything on my own 1+5 = 6 growth minset

math doing more math instead of just putting it behind me I’m better at language and math

Earlier this year I had no clue how to do division. Now I know its not that much different than multiplication.

I did 7+8 learned how to read better learned how to read having my own choices

A lot about bugs because I never really knew anything about bugs because I didn’t really like them. I still don’t really like them. writing and cursive math reading writing

reading reading and spelling habits math reading

how to read math because last year math was easy and this year it was hard reading

I learned that language was not so hard. I learned the most about not giving up as easily.

I realized that other people could be helpful leading the studio instead of just me.

Dictated by the Fire Studio…

To the Spark and Fire heroes, how did you change the most this year?

If someone says no, I’ll stop I like to write not giving up I got better at reading

I’m a lot better at holding people accountable I made more friends and I learned a lot

did more language I’m better at making friends making progress in reading

I like reading and I didn’t like it in the beginning of the year I’m a lot braver

I used to have to ask people and now I can read it bravery and learning and reading and spelling and math

making better choices I like reading better and I really like Writer’s Gym be more kind

I’ve probably overreacted less and have been embarrassed less. I just realized it doesn’t matter what other’s think.

better at making friends more willing to help people and I help people more

better at making friends I can focus when its loud better at making friends

I have more friends using my influence for a better cause I focus more

I’m kinder less stressed because now I go to CHOICE I did not want to go to language and now I do

I like playing soccer against my friends and random people I worked more this year

last year I only did one drawer and now I’m doing so many of them I became a better friend.

I’m better at being curious, and my dad really likes that. I’m better at reading. I’m better at writing

I feel like I”m better at playing with all my friends instead of just certain ones. I can do math better

I used to think I couldn’t do things, but now I know I can.

The DELTA studio heroes were asked the same two questions: What did you learn most this year? How did you change most this year? They wrote meaningful responses. Sadly, in the end of year shuffle I misplaced their responses. I don’t want to cheapen them by summarizing or in any way misrepresent them. So I guess you’ll just have to come back next year to hear their responses 🙂 In the meantime, look at the pictures below.

DELTA studio heroes presenting small gifts to the FS & SS heroes (it was all their idea)

DELTA studio heroes signing yearbooks of all the younger heroes (all the heroes felt so comfortable asking them!)

DELTA studio heroes walking their “buddies” to and from the parks/school.

Fire Studio heroes feeling comfortable enough to tackle a DELTA studio hero.

DELTA studio heroes working hard and having fun together.

As I finish writing the final blog of the year, I ask myself the same questions: “What have I learned this year?” “How have I changed this year?” When all is said and done, and I forget everything else (which doesn’t take too long these days), what am I taking with me? I hope my answers are similar to these young heroes – to be braver, to be a better friend, to get better at things that are hard for me, to persevere, to be kinder, to help others. I believe what the heroes – and myself – are taking with us from this year are the things that matter most.

And what do I want the parents to know about CHOICE? That I am honored to be surrounded by their children every day. They are fun, brave, strong, remarkable young people who are finding their calling and changing the world!
